Love Potion #9

Rom-Com Picks

5. Confessions of a Shopaholic

As a young girl who did the whole Carrie Bradshaw thing at a young age I could absolutely relate to Rebecca Bloomwood. She was so delightfully clueless on life outside of Bloomingdales and Isla Fisher created such a hilarious character. Moving to a city to start a new life and seeing where it takes you is one of the best life hacks you could experiment with and Rebecca certainly uses her personality to get her into some seriously comedic and adorable situations. If Sex and the City had a wacky opposite this movie would be the spoof that captured it perfectly.

4. You People

"My Favorite Jew with nothing to do" - Yeah you already got my top 5 picks with that line. Jonah Hill has been a younger Jason Bateman since Superbad (himself on screen that somehow always translates to a hilarious performance). Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Eddie Murphy are old school movie/tv show royalty so picking them as the parents seemed like a natural fit. Lastly Nia Long and Lauren London are porcelain dolls that are mesmerizing to watch on any television so the perfect cast is always going to equal the perfect Rom-Com. Dealing with a very 2023 issue (inter-racial dating) you can easily see how both sides can get caught up in the culture rather than focus on the love. This movie made it fun to watch both however and I just loved it.

3. What's Your Number?

Ah the age old question that haunts some women and puts others at ease. This movie was HILARIOUS....and if I wrote a rom-com it would come out just like this. Ally Darling is on a desperate quest to re-date her old flames so she doesn't go over a certain number of how many men she's slept with. It has been an ancient folklore (not really) that the lower the number the more desirable a woman is for marriage but that only holds true based on the man who's judging. Chris Evans plays the douche-bag hot neighbor who obviously is avoided because he will end up just adding to the list but as the movie goes on you see why these two make the perfect pick for each other.

2. Coming to America

When you talk Hollywood 80's royalty...Eddie Murphy is the only thing you need to concern yourself with. From Trading Places to Beverly Hills Cop and more this man was who you called to bring butts in the theater seats. Coming to America was me and my brothers golden movie and every scene was more hilarious than the last. From the "She's Your Queen" scene to "I like whatever you like" right down to "I believe the Children are our future" this movie has lines and feels for days. This is the crown jewel of Rom-Coms and was THE movie in my childhood years. Fairytale is an understatement when it comes to this movie...this movie is just the coronation the nation needs.

1. Crazy Rich Asians

When you talk about a love story of epic and International proportions Crazy Rich Asians should be at the top if not #1 on the list. The other Rom-Coms on this list are cute and fuzzy but the biggest 2 royal (Coming to America) and grand (Crazy Rich Asians) Rom-Coms are in a league of their own. The ultimate Asian Bachelor (not my words...watch the movie!) Nick Young loves and adores his intelligent, witty and sassy gf Rachel but that doesn't come without a legion of undesirables doing whatever they can to keep these two apart. Not only does Rachel show these folks who's boss but everything about this movie screams lux living and highlights 1 of my fav countries in the world...Singapore! Prepare to check in to the Marina Bay Sands and some other fabulous Southeast Asian locations as this fabulous cast brings you into a whimsical world of love and triumph. Side note ASTRID IS LIFE!
