So like many places I have visited in Europe, I had a very specific mission when I came to Munich, Germany. I wanted to visit the location where Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was filmed and I wanted to visit Dachau Concentration Camp. I have an eerie connection to World War II in my head and visiting there (and later Poland) became 2 life buckets for me to accomplish. Germany was a place of horror back in the 30's but as it stands today Germany is a quiet and quaint little country that is likely trying to revamp its name in the public eye. There were no large impressive buildings but there was an amazing festival happening in the Marienplatz, a cute clocktower that I'm positive was in the opening of my Willy Wonka movie and some delicious brats and desserts. I'll touch on my visit to Dachau first; It was freezing outside but it took about 20 mins to arrive and the minute I got out of the car I could feel the pain and despair that no one could miss. Reading the plaques and walking down the dirt paths that caused a race of people their lives is something I would never wish upon anyone but attention and respect must be observed for these atrocities. Please if you are in Munich visit this now historical landmark and honor those who gave their lives for the freedom and rights we all celebrate today. It almost feels inappropriate to talk about the amazing shopping that can be done not to far away from the Marienplatz but I will mention it here and if anyone wants to take advantage you absolutely should. Most importantly I will close with how important it is to pay respects to those fallen in this country and also highlight the importance of forgiveness to not only the people but the tourism.
General Consensus: Munich, Germany is strictly where one would go for a good festival, some rich history and to pay respects to the Jewish lives lost in this country. I didn't have the pleasure of visiting outside of Munich but I hear places like Stuttgart, Berlin, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Cologne are also worth visiting.
